Old age does not discriminate against anyone. Sooner or later, we all—rich and poor, Jews and Arabs, religious and secular—become senior citizens. The welcome increase in life expectancy in the West and Israel makes old age—which includes the question of the future of our pension system—into a burning social, economic, and political question. This question is often discussed in the negative: retirement is life without work. But the same question can also be framed in positive terms: How can we create a pension system that allows a generation that is better educated, healthier, and longer-lived than its ancestors to maintain its quality of life?
